March 25, 2011

- Guangdong Mobile, a subsidiary of China Mobile in Guangdong, is projected to complete its network construction and optimization based on TD-LTE (Time Division-Long Term Evolution) technology in September 2011, the Sina Tech News reported on March 23. China Mobile stated that the company will establish 220 base stations for demonstration networks located in Guangdong and Shenzhen, as part of the company's efforts to accelerate the commercialization of its TD-LTE network earlier than planned. It is learnt that Guangdong Mobile not only has been conducting trials on TD-LTE demonstration networks but also have been massively expanding its WLAN (Wireless Local Access Network) access points. The company is projected to include an additional of 20,000 access points during 2011 in order to cover 21 major cities in Guangdong, which is expected to turn Guangdong into a wireless city with TD-LTE and WLAN supports, according to the same source.

In the wake of the completion of a series of interoperability tests required by China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information) and China Mobile since January 2010, telecom equipment supplier Alcatel-Lucent announced on March 24 that the company entered into a collaboration agreement with China Mobile, according to a press release by Alcatel-Lucent. Pursuant to the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will provide LTE solution to help China Mobile deploy 4G TD-LTE demonstration networks on a large-scale across China, with Shanghai being the first. Through the TD-LTE demonstration network, China Mobile is capable of providing a wide range of high-speed mobile broadband services for its subscribers, including HD (High Definition) video streaming, 3D gaming, and high-speed Internet access services. Deliverables include LTE base stations and the EPC (Evolved Packet Core).
